Arrow Lakes Revegetation Program Public Meeting (7:00PM)

Dear Arrow Lakes Reservoir Stakeholder:

BC Hydro is hosting a meeting in Castlegar to gather input and discuss plans for the Arrow Lakes Reservoir Revegetation Program as part of the Columbia River Water Use Plan scheduled for implementation this summer.

Date: April 1, 2008
Location: Super 8 Hotel, 651 - 18th Street, Castlegar, BC

Meeting Start Time: 7:00 p.m.

The goal of the revegetation program is to increase vegetation cover and plant diversity in the drawdown areas between elevations 434m and 440m. This increased cover and diversity is expected to provide benefits to fish & wildlife habitat, archaeological site protection, dust control, recreation and shoreline stability.

The program will focus on planting sedges, willow and other plant species. Preliminary sites for replanting in the Arrow Lakes Reservoir drawdown area were identified using air photos and digital elevation models. This summer, sites between elevations 434m and 440m were visited by field crews to assess their suitability as replanting sites. Through this work, a total of 28 suitable sites representing a total area of 393 hectares within the Arrow Lakes Reservoir drawdown zone have been identified.

BC Hydro expects to begin planting next year (2009) and continue until 2012. The last two years of the program (2011 and 2012) will be implemented in conjunction with the Wildlife Physical Works in Lieu to ensure that revegetation efforts are targeting those areas where wildlife habitat benefits can be maximized. Areas in addition to the currently identified 393 ha will be planted in the final two years.

BC Hydro will be working with Arrow Lakes Reservoir users and other interested stakeholders to develop appropriate treatments for each site. BC Hydro will be sharing information from the results of studies completed to date, including maps of the proposed planting site locations and some preliminary treatment approaches. BC Hydro will be asking Arrow Lakes Reservoir users to identify sites that are not appropriate for revegetation because of recreational use or other reasons and would appreciate feedback on the proposed sites and treatment approaches.

If you have any questions about the meeting please feel free to give me a contact me at (250) 365-4565, or by email at amy.white@bchydro.com . You are welcome to forward this information to others who may have an interest.
