We're Compiling a List of the Top 50 Things To Do in the Greater Trail Area

 And you, the reader of our site can help us come up with the nomination list...

A Call for Nominations From Our Readers

Gyro Park imageThe Greater Trail area is a beautiful place to live and visit. And there are so many ways to experience it all – whether it be during spring, summer, fall or winter and only one lifetime to do it – So where on Earth do you start in the Greater Trail area with so many places to visit and enjoy throughout the year?

That’s where this articles series comes in . . .

Welcome to a special edition of Greater Trail Area Visitor/Traveller. Compiling the Top 50 Things To Do In The Greater Trail Area Before You Die is an exercise fraught with picks and different opinions, as we always knew it would be. Trailites can’t agree on which Canadian NHL team to hope for throughout the hockey season, let alone vote on what things are the best to see and do and experience throughout the seasons in our beautiful area of the BC Interior.

So we are undertaking this project with a real understanding of the challenges. That’s why we stood back and said we shouldn’t be the arbiters of this guide, but instead the facilitators of the debate.

Ultimately, the Top 50 Things To Do list should be a collaborative assessment that represents all of the Greater Trail area, which really requires two things:

  • a starting point that includes as many “things to do” as possible;
  • and then a way to distil this into the Top 50 Things that should be prioritised as the most important.

To arrive at an exhaustive starting list, we will appeal to those most informed: Local residents and frequent visitors to the Greater Trail area. So this article is a call for our site Readers to Submit a Nomination (or nominations, as we invite readers to post their votes and comments below - and vote early and often).

To balance this we will enlist the help of our bank of local expert activity/travel writers and contributing authors, and finally you, our site readers, through the comment section of our website below. Each comment (vote, or vote for nominations) will be reviewed by our staff at the Trail Chamber before it is published to the site to compile the possible Things to Do.

As we receive nominations, we will divide them into two categories:

  • around 150 probable, and;
  • 150 possible items.
Each nomination will be then scored out of five, with a score of one being “No Way”, and a five being a “Must Be Included.” We will then tally the totals, and finalize our Top 50 Things To Do in the Greater Trail Area list.

By participating, you will help the Trail Chamber to create a guide primarily for area visitors/travellers, so we can keep them informed as to which things to do that are believed to be important must see and do.

A great example is “Visit Gyro Park in the Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter. Especially for the Polar Bear Swim in the Columbia River on New Years Day.”

Beach and water activities are year round at Gyro Park in Greater Trail BC.

Other possibilities could be the following;

Overload your senses at an action filled Trail SmokeEaters game, or a Beaver Valley Nighhawk game, Dive into the Columbia River on New Years Day, Find freedom on the Antenna Loop Trail in Montrose, Climb or hike up to the Sunningdale/Mount Heniz Peak Canadian Flag,  Cruise the Columbia River on a rafting tour,  and so much more...

But we'll leave the nominations of the short list of things to do up to you, the Reader...

We hope you find the inspiration to get out and see this great area of ours, and of course we know visitors and locals will help us come up with a few Things To Do in our area. That’s our goal, and that’s how it’s supposed to work – so we’ve set up this section on our web portal for you to tell us what you think should’ make it on the Top 50 Things to Do List.

Let us know as we’ll be publishing your votes and comments over the coming issues based on the readers’ choices. But for now, happy trails, and use the comment area below to cast your vote, and don’t forget to send us a postcard from somewhere out there . . .

To get you inspired to vote, here are a few area photos to get you thinking about your favorite things to do...

Gyro Park is one of the most beautiful Parks in the West Kootenays, and it will most likely be on the list of picks for a place of favorite things to do in the Greater Trail Area. Whether you visit or frequent Gyro Park in spring, summer, fall or winter, once you've been to Gyro Park you'll most likely do so often. In particular, the beautiful sand carvings on the beach at Gyro Park have been created by a world class sand sculpturer over the past few years.

Situated on the Columbia River, Gyro Park offers visitors and locals opportunities from river fishing and path walks to live music performances and fall festivals. You can follow the meandering river walk from Gyro Park in East Trail along the Columbia River to the sub-division of Sunningdale to get some exercise, or just to take in the beautful scenery. Or dip into the chilly waters at Gyro Park, and enjoy an afternnon doing some river fishing, or simply spend a day or a few hours relaxing, swimming, or taking a dip in the waters closet to the rocks and shore.

And for those that enjoy more strenuous water activities, paddle a canoe or kayak in the waters at this family-friendly beachfront park.  At the end of the day, relax and listen to the melodic tunes under the gazebo in Gyro Park, where you’ll enjoy live music Thursdays in July and August.

Cast your vote below and make your comments known using the comment area provided: What do you think?

Note! All comments will be reviewed by the TCOC staff before they are published... Don't worry if you don't see your vote or comment approved right away. We'll get to it as soon as we can...
