New Dates for Passport Requirements

Effective January 31, 2008

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers will no longer accept oral declarations of U.S. or Canadian citizenship from those travelling by land.

It is anticipated that by late summer 2008 U.S. CBP officials will begin to require that all travellers, including citizens of both Canada and the U.S., present a valid passport or other designated document when entering the U.S. by any means, including by land, sea and air. The passport should be unexpired and good for the duration of the intended trip. It does not have to be valid for any specific duration.

U.S. and Canadian travellers will be required to present:

¨      A government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license and

¨      A birth certificate or other proof of citizenship;

¨      Or – for youth 18 and under – a birth certificate alone

¨      Or a valid Passport

If you were not able to attend one of the two recent passport clinics held in Trail or Castlegar there is some good news; a Canadian passport office recently opened in Cranbrook at 1113 Baker Street. Hours are Monday-Friday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm Mountain Time.
