Little bit of Afghanistan...

Submitted by: David McTeer WO  David McTeer picture

Reservist David McTeer is a Warrent Officer (WO) with the 44th Field Engineer Squadron, Trail,BC serving in Afghanistan. He has graciously offered to send us bits of life from his tour in Afghanistan. This is the first in a series.(inspired by Ina, my muse.)

"To. a Canadian Hero with Thanks"

 I did find some inspiration in the dust and dirt of Afghanistan the other day.

I was taking over the warehouse from the outgoing Quartermaster and we were cleaning it up in preparation of all the new incoming equipment and stores, I was busy moving boxes and sweeping what seemed to be the desert out of the warehouse (the sand is everywhere) I saw an old piece of paper in the dirt and debris I was going to sweep it away but there was something about it that made me stop and pick it up, it was a dusty envelope but I could just make out the handwriting on the front of it, it was neat and old fashion like my mothers handwriting. I brushed off the dust there were no postmarks, stamps or return address, just the words:

"To a Canadian Hero with Thanks

The letter was not sealed so I pulled it out to take a look, it was hand written on a very nice piece of writing paper and the letter read as follows,

"To: A Canadian Hero;

I want to thank you for the difference you are making in the lives of others. I go the Repatriations at CFB Trenton to show respect & honour to the fallen soldiers who have made the supreme sacrifice & let their families know we care.

We pray you will complete your tour of duty and return home safely to your loved ones. We do Remember you and your comrades.

Sincerely thoughts and prayers are with you daily.

The Crosby's"

A short and simple letter like that says so much to the men and women that serve our country, I know I speak for many when I say we do not feel like hero's but it is nice to be treated like one. So to the Crosby's and so many other families like them I say thank you for your kind support it does mean a lot to us, and may we always continue to make you proud of us.

Respectfully,

Warrant Officer

David McTeer
