Power outage knocks out Internet Service

Our own site was affected by this outage for about 4 ½ hours on July 14th, 2008 and we like to apologize for any inconvenience that this may have been to any visitors to our site. Casa Aplina of Rossland and Teck Cominco Metals was also affected by this outage, we have not heard of any other local businesses that were affected by the outage at this time.

An underground fire in down town Vancouver Monday July 14th knocked out power in a 5 block area of the business district. The fire was reported to have start around 9:30 am and was finally out by 3 pm. Read more

Adding to the power outage woes, Internet services for many companies was blacked out when one of seven backup generators at Harbour Centre, a major telecommunications and Internet hub in Vancouver, conked out.

Douglas Hume, vice-president and general manager of the Harbour Centre complex, said two major tenants were affected.

"Unfortunately, we're a big network of customers and clients," Hume said. "I think the repercussions were felt all over North America."

Several hundred Internet servers lost power, said Martin Robson of Robson Communications Inc. That means many corporate websites - including BC Ferries' - were down.

"We have over 200 servers located at Harbour Centre and they're off-line as a result of the power outage," Robson said. "A huge number of companies (are) off-line."

Many of those organizations affected weren't even in Vancouver. Read more
